Today was "Youth Sunday" at our church. The youth of the curch plan and run the entire service for the day. From prayers, readings, affirmations, service music and the sermon.
The young man who wrote and delivered the sermon surpised me greatly. I am, and have been, his Sunday School teacher for the past 3 years. He has always been very conservative in his thinking to the point of taking many things in the bible literally. His point of view appeared to have 'softened' ab bit over the past 3 years, as both myself and my co-teacher are more to the liberal side of things. But I was shocked with what he said today.
The sermon title was "A Definition of Christianity". I was very curious as to where he was going to take it. He chose several passages of scripture to illustrate his point. The conclusion he drew was that God = Love. People were created in God's image means people are capable of great love. Jesus was Love incarnate. Christ told us to "believe as a child" and children love unconditionally. His conclusion is that "true" christians who will achieve heaven are those who show love here on Earth. We are saved not by what we profess but how we show love to our fellow "man".
This young man blew me away! I was expecting a "belive like me or go to hell" type of sermon from him. I hope I had some small part in helping him draw the conclusion he did.
